BigYield Spotlight - Importance of Natural Chelation

Kent Kauffman discusses the secrets naturally chelated nutrients, and the importance and benefits of these types of nutrients.

Listen to Kent Kauffman of the BigYield.us team and Kyle Hill, Ag 1280 Farm Director, each Monday, Wednesday, and Friday on Ag 1280 KDKD-AM. The segments air at 7:15 am and again at 12:15 pm.

This segment originally aired on May 10, 2017.

Kyle: Welcome back to the BigYield Spotlight. I’m Kyle Hill, once again joined in-studio by Kent Kauffman of BigYield.us. Good to have you here today.

Kent: Thanks for having me on Kyle.

Kyle: Last time we talked a little about your BigYieldCoat Soy. Can you tell us a little more about how the product works?

Kent: Well our BigYieldCoat Soy is a dry planter box treatment. It’s used in the same manner as talc or graphite. Whether your using it on corn or soybeans you use it in that same manner. It’s applied during planting, and we can work with same of the seed providers here in the area to pre-apply it to your seeds if you’re getting seed from them. It provides nine essential nutrients to your soybeans that are all naturally chelated.

Kyle: Now what does it mean to be chelated?

Kent: So what chelation is, is it forms a protective barrier around your nutrient using ligand bonds. What this means is that it does not get degraded in the environment by water, wind, sun, or other organisms. It also gives you a very long shelf-life. Once you put it on your seed you can leave it there. It’s not going to go bad like some of your seed treatments that do if they are exposed to the air. And so chelation is kind of like a claw that goes over those nutrients to protect them, it kind of holds them in there.

Kyle: Now you told me earlier that these essential nutrients are naturally chelated. What is the advantage of that natural chelation?

Kent: Most every nutrient you have is going to be chelated in some manner. Most of them are going to be chelated synthetically. What this synthetic chelation is, is it’s called EDTA chelation. It’s very, very strong bonds and has very large molecular weight – it’s a very big structure, a very big “claw,” to hold that nutrient.

Kyle: And it’s also a very long name for EDTA, that’s why we’re just calling it EDTA.

Kent: Yes sir it is. And so this very strong bond, what it means is that it’s very hard to break. That means it will stay in the environment longer but it’s also very hard for your plant to use it. Also the big molecules are harder for your plant to transport and for your microorganisms in your soil to transport as well to your root zone. So what we use is natural chelation. Natural chelation gives a wide variety of bonds. We don’t just have one large bond that is difficult to break – we have many different small bonds that are of various levels. So as those processes go along from your microorganisms from your plant, it breaks it down easier. The small particles are easier to move. What we’ve seen is synthetic chelation will get anywhere from one to two days of absorption, versus with our natural chelated nutrients we can get less than two hours of absorption.

Kyle: Well it looks like we’ve gone into the laboratory to talk about natural chelation. What does it mean for the farmer in the field?

Kent: Getting back into the field and out of the lab, what it means is that your going to get quicker absorption by your crops, and you’re going to get better yields. That’s what we want – we want better yields for a good price. We’ve seen anywhere from 6 to 11 percent yield increase in naturally chelated nutrients over synthetically chelated nutrients. So you’re getting those same nutrients out there but your plants using more of them, even though you don’t need to use more product.

Kyle: And that’s impressive indeed. Kent Kauffman with BigYield.us. If someone has questions about BigYield seed treatments or any other products you have available, how can they get ahold of you?

Kent: The easiest way is our website, www.BigYield.us. We have all the products on the website that people can see. We have a toll-free phone number, 844-242-4367 and they can stop by the research farm, we’re located at 28706 S. St. Rt. 7, West of Garden City, Missouri. Drive down 7 highway and your going to see the big research farm signs. We also have a Facebook page as well, BigYield.us on Facebook.

Kyle: Kent we thank you very much for your perspective today, talking about your seed treatments with BigYield.us. Looking forward to another conversation with you.

Kent: Thank you Kyle.
