GARDEN CITY, MO. (Sept. 6, 2014) – The Farm Research Center is hosting its annual Ag Way Days event this Saturday.

FFA chapters from surrounding Missouri communities will gather on the research farm to participate in an agricultural based competition. Cash prizes will be awarded to the top three teams to support their chapters.
Starting at 10am on Saturday teams from eight different FFA Chapters will calculate the bushel yield on two standing crops, corn and soybean. Students will go into the designated research plots and calculate estimated yield using methods developed from two university programs. As a basis for their calculations, they will be counting kernels on ears of corn, and counting pods on soybean plants. In addition, students will learn about the different career opportunities that exist on the farm, and in agriculture as a whole.
Each team will submit their calculations to the research center team on Saturday. Awards are figured by comparison of actual yield data, collected by a third party, to the yield data calculated by each FFA team. All chapters will be awarded $250 for participating in the contest. The students will be asked to return to The Farm Research Center in October where the three most accurate teams will be awarded prizes for their efforts. 1st place winner will be awarded $1000, 2nd place $500, and 3rd place $250.
Ag Way Days is an annual event held at The Farm Research Center as an opportunity for students to learn more about agriculture and to get prepared for a career in and around the farm. In addition to that, this event is a fun way for students from Adrian, Appleton City, Cass Career Center, Cass Midway, Cole Camp, Holden, Montrose and Rich Hill to work together and network around agriculture. “It is our hope that these students will see agriculture, and our commitment to the farm, in a way that inspires them to pursue careers in the industry”, says Franklin Weaver, Agronomist and CCA at the Farm Research Center.
